Anyone who wants to sell products or provide their expertise to clients through a website cannot forget to add SEO (Search Engine Optimization) into their business strategy. To some people who have never heard of SEO the task of optimizing websites can sound daunting at first and as a result the number of companies and experts dedicated to SEO has exploded over the last years. - Keyword optimized backlink research – Offpage style: You may think that keyword research is something you’ll only have to do when you build your website, but in-fact the principles of keyword research are vital when conducting research for exactly which websites that you would like to receive a backlink from. Whatever your keyword, there are a number of methods you can use to find suitable websites for a backlink. The most obvious method is to do a simple Google search for keyword relevant websites, but also why not check out Google blog search and Google news as well? Another way to find keyword relevant websites is to set-up a channel for your keyword on tweetdeck where you can be notified anytime someone uses your keyword in a tweet. All you need to do is check out the site of this tweeter and get in contact with them if their site is relevant and has good enough quality.
- How to rate the quality of a website: There are a number of tools that can assist you in judging the quality of a website from which you want to obtain a backlink. The most notable popular tool is Opensiteexplorer which when you check the URL of your chosen site, will tell you the pagerank, domain popularity (number of unique domains linking to this site) and the domain authority score for this site. The domain authority and domain popularity factors have become more important since the Panda update and the magic numbers you want to see are domain authority: 30+ and domain popularity: 50+
- Become a freelance blogger: There’s no better way than to create quality links for your site than to start your own freelance blogging career. This is where you will need to brush up your writing skills and be ready to share your expertise with others. Making contact with other web designers and negotiating for guest author spots on their blogs is a great way to do some word-of-mouth marketing for your site within the online web design community, but it’s also a great way to obtain some quality backlinks for your site. You write some interesting guest articles which make their readers happy, you share your knowledge with others and in the end you get a SEO boost, everyone’s happy!
- Backlink fundamentals: Make sure that your backlinks are “follow” and make sure that you optimize the anchor text for your chosen keyword. If your keyword is “logo design” then do not create anchor text that says “quality wordpress templates and designs”. Spending hours on obtaining a backlink just for it to be “nofollow” (where the website places a block on your link so that the Google search robots can’t follow your link to your site) and contain the wrong anchor text will bring no benefit to your ranking results.
- Quality over quantity: There is no need to create thousands of backlinks for your keyword. Of course the number of links and time needed will vary depending on the competitiveness of your keyword. However, focusing on a smaller number of websites that are respected and rated as quality sites by Google will ensure that you start to see some effect on your ranking position after a relatively short amount of time.
Maybe in the future universities will offer a degree in SEO, but in the meantime, you’ll be able to get your website off the ground through a mixture of strong Onpage SEO structure and unique, quality backlink creation. It’s that simple, if you’ve got some quality content, services or products to bring to the visitors of your website then with some easy Onpage modifications and smart Offpage tactics, there will be no barrier to your success.
